Workshop description
If you are looking for a different kind of experience away from the main islands of Harris and Lewis or Skye, then how about visiting and photographing the equally beautiful yet lesser visited islands of Uist? This chain of islands in the Outer Hebrides is a lost world of vast empty beaches as far as the eye can see, and peaceful country roads that meander through a wilderness landscape comprised of lovely undulating hills and stark moorland. You will absolutely love the empty, wide open spaces with big skies and friendly locals.
Uist is the name of a collective of islands that make up Uist, Berneray, North Uist, Grimsay, Benbecula, South Uist & Eriskay. It is easy to get to from the mainland and other islands, so you could even tag it on to a Harris and Lewis Workshop. All the Uist islands are linked by causeways and each has its own unique character. We will also visit the islands of Barra and Vatersay to the south.
On this workshop, you will visit and photograph a variety of photographic subjects such as vast white sandy beaches where you can practice seascapes and minimalistic styles of photography. You will visit Eriskay, a more inhabited island, and photograph the locals who still work their crofts and fish the surroundings seas. Eriskay is famous for the unique Eriskay pony, the original horsepower of the Hebrides, of which there are only about 400 in the world.
We will visit Berneray, whose beaches, but not weather, rival those you would find in exotic places such as Thailand. The weather will remind you that you are up in Scotland, though. While it is easy to be put off by the seemingly bad weather, it’s exactly these kinds of conditions that produce the best light and most amazing moments to photograph. The light will be constantly changing and this is the perfect time to hone your photographic eye and technical skills with expert guidance every step of the way. You will learn to be more adaptive in rapidly changing conditions and how to react in unexpected weather.
Our evenings will be spent looking back over your images shot on location and we will offer tips and techniques for editing in Lightroom and Photoshop. Group discussions will foster a positive learning experience for all, with everyone offering advice from their own experience.
Island hopping on Uist is an experience that you will never forget, and will come away from with so many memories, newfound skills and wonderful experiences.
